Gambling Addiction

A gambling addiction can happen to anyone, even if they believe that a gambling addiction will never happen to them. In fact, those that are having a gambling addiction are going to find that they do not notice that they have a problem, it is those around them that are going to notice the problem. And when the friends and families start to notice the problem, then the best thing that they can do is to make sure that the person is getting the help that they need. But what are warning signs of having a gambling addiction?

Those that have a gambling addiction are going to have the mindset that they must gamble. They are going to associate the winning of a hand of cars or at the slot machines with their quality of life. Thus, those that have a problem are going to be noticeably happier when they are winning, and when they are losing they are going to be in a deep depression. Most people are going to suggest that this is how everyone is when they are losing or winning. However, an addict is going to be ten times worse when they are losing and over the moon when they are happy, thus their emotions are really heightened. The person is also going to notice that the addict rarely keeps money in their pocket, so to speak, for very long. The reason for this is that the person is wanting to gamble, and when they have the money they are going to run out and gamble. This is the first thing that points to them having an addiction. They may even go so far as to take out loans against the things that they own in order to keep playing. They no longer have a level head when it comes to gambling and life is literally about the game and winning the game.

So what happens when a person realizes that they do have a problem? They need to get treatment. Unlike the use of drugs and alcohol, gambling is something that is going to be dealt with on a psychological level, the person really has no physical addiction to gambling. They are going to find that through group therapy they are going to be able to realize that they were using gambling to replace feelings of happiness in their life or that they were using gambling in order to no longer worry about their life, the reasons are numerous and each person is going to be different. However, it is through therapy and years of it that the person is able to walk by a casino without feeling as though they have to gamble. But, the person should remember that they are always going to be prone to fall back into their old ways. Which means that they should avoid gambling and participating in any kind of activity that reminds them of gambling so that they stick to their new way of life.
